Brisbane’s $4.8 billion Airport Link, Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) and Airport Roundabout Upgrade Projects are currently Australia's largest road infrastructure project. When completed, the 6.7km toll road will provide a direct link between Brisbane’s CBD and the city’s northern suburbs and airport. The project comprises a total of 15 kilometres of tunnelling, including twin 5.1 km running tunnels, a 3km busway tunnel and various exit and entry ramps, interconnecting emergency access ways and cross passages. Tunnel excavation methods include; cut and cover, roadheader/mined and TBM tunnelling.
PSM were engaged as sub-consultants to the project designers, providing expertise for investigation interpretation, ground characterisation and excavation support design. The role saw key PSM personnel incorporated into the design team, assuming leading roles for:
• Development of a project wide tunnel design manual and various excavation and material specifications.
• Development of a project wide, 3D geological / geotechnical ground model.
• Characterisation of expected ground conditions and development of project wide tunnelling design parameters.
• Design of initial support for a range structures including large span caverns, decline structures and mainline running tunnels.
